Four People Dead from Poisoning | Gas Poisoning Accident Occurs at a Coking Plant in Luliang City, Shanxi Province

According to CCTV News, it was learned from the Shanxi Provincial Work Safety Commission that at approximately 18:50 on February 23, 2024, a gas poisoning accident occurred at the coking plant of Wangzhuang Pig Iron Co., Ltd. in Jiaokou County, Luliang City, Shanxi Province, resulting in the death of four individuals who succumbed to the poisoning despite emergency medical treatment.

Carbon monoxide, commonly known as coal gas, is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. It has reducing properties and has a low solubility in water, but it is easily absorbed by ammonia water.

Carbon monoxide is a flammable and explosive gas. When mixed with air, it can form an explosive mixture that can ignite or explode when exposed to open flames or high heat.

In addition to its flammable and explosive properties, carbon monoxide is also a highly toxic gas. When carbon monoxide enters the human body, it binds to hemoglobin in the blood, forming carboxyhemoglobin, which prevents hemoglobin from binding with oxygen. This leads to oxygen deficiency in the body's tissues, ultimately causing asphyxiation and death.

Given the characteristic of coke plants that produce large amounts of carbon monoxide during the production process, it is necessary to actively monitor carbon monoxide in the working environment in real-time. Therefore, a device capable of continuous, online, and real-time monitoring of carbon monoxide is required.
