China Takes the Lead! International Standard for Hydrogen Sulfide Detection Officially Released

On May 13, 2026, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) officially issued five international standards for the natural gas sector led by China. Among them, Determination of Hydrogen Sulfide by Laser Absorption Spectroscopy has been formally implemented, filling the global gap in standards for the accurate detection of high-sulfur natural gas. Leveraging China’s independent core technologies, this standard establishes authoritative global guidelines for hydrogen sulfide monitoring and underpins the safe and efficient development of the global energy industry.

Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic, strongly corrosive and hazardous gas widely present across natural gas extraction, gathering and transmission, purification, industrial environmental protection, waste incineration and other scenarios. It severely corrodes pipelines, wellbores and production equipment, triggering equipment damage and unplanned shutdown risks. Worse still, it poses a direct threat to the lives of frontline workers, making it a critical hazard that must be strictly managed in the energy and industrial sectors.

The release of this international standard marks TDLAS (Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy) as a globally recognized and authoritative technical solution for hydrogen sulfide detection. It effectively addresses long-standing industry pain points of traditional detection methods, including severe signal drift, frequent interference, high false alarm rates and inaccurate data, enabling standardized monitoring with high precision, stable performance and traceable results.

1. Tackling the World-Class Challenge of Hydrogen Sulfide Monitoring

Built on laser absorption spectroscopy technology, this ISO international standard targets the monitoring difficulties in high-sulfur gas reservoirs and long-distance transmission pipelines, delivering remarkable industrial benefits:

Precisely monitor hydrogen sulfide concentration and accurately predict sulfur deposition. A single gas field achieves an annual output increase of 70 million cubic meters, boosting oil and gas production efficiency.

Prevent corrosion and damage to equipment and pipelines, reduce risks of unplanned pipeline shutdowns, and safeguard the long-term safe operation of over 40,000 kilometers of cross-border natural gas pipelines worldwide.

Ensure accurate and compliant data free from cross-interference and baseline drift. Round-the-clock online precise monitoring eliminates alarm fatigue completely.

Cut down frequent calibration and consumable replacement, substantially lowering operation and maintenance costs, and achieving a win-win for safety management, cost reduction and efficiency improvement.

2. Sinoke Ocean: Leading Edge in Core Technology

As a pioneer in TDLAS technology, Sinoke Ocean’s core technologies share the same principles and performance indicators as the new international standard, delivering universal adaptability. With outstanding technical strengths, our solutions have become the benchmark for high-precision hydrogen sulfide monitoring.

Molecular-level Accurate Identification
Adopting exclusive spectral fingerprint recognition for hydrogen sulfide, it only detects target gas with zero interference from water vapor, miscellaneous gases and dust, ensuring data consistent with true physical values.

Zero Drift & Zero Error
Free from the drawbacks of traditional chemical sensors, it operates stably regardless of working conditions, temperature and humidity, requiring no frequent calibration during long-term operation.

24/7 Stable Operation
Adaptable to extreme harsh environments featuring high temperature, high humidity, strong corrosion and heavy dust, supporting non-stop online monitoring 7 days a week.

Intrinsic Safety & Timely Early Warning
Reacts to excessive gas leakage within seconds, delivering accurate and instant early warnings without delay or false alarms, forming the first line of defense for safe production.

3. Field Projects Validate Our Strengths

Benchmark Case 1: Hydrogen Sulfide Monitoring Project for High-Sulfur Gas Fields in Southwest Oil & Gas Field

For full-scenario operations including extraction, purification and gathering & transmission of large-scale domestic high-sulfur natural gas fields, Sinoke Ocean deployed TDLAS online hydrogen sulfide monitoring systems, covering high-risk areas such as gas wellbores, desulfurization facilities, sulfur recovery units and gas transmission pipelines.

Project Outcomes: The system realizes real-time and precise monitoring of hydrogen sulfide concentration, effectively curbing corrosion of pipelines and equipment and eliminating leakage and poisoning risks. It accurately forecasts sulfur deposition to guarantee stable and increased gas production. Fully compliant with the new international standard, this project sets a standardized model for the safe exploitation of domestic high-sulfur gas fields.

Benchmark Case 2: Hydrogen Sulfide Monitoring Project for Beijing Gao'antun Waste Incineration Power Plant

To cope with extreme working conditions in waste incineration and leachate treatment workshops — high humidity, strong corrosion, heavy dust and mixed complex gases, Sinoke Ocean customized an integrated monitoring solution for hydrogen sulfide and other toxic gases, resolving issues such as false alarms, data distortion and monitoring blind spots of conventional equipment.

Project Outcomes: The system detects trace hydrogen sulfide emission accurately around the clock with no false alerts, putting an end to frontline staff’s alarm fatigue. It strengthens safety protection for confined spaces in the plant, safeguards workers’ health, and supports the plant’s environmental compliance and stable operation. This project has become a model for hydrogen sulfide monitoring in the industrial environmental protection sector.

4. Standards-led Development: Chinese Technology Empowers the World

The formulation of this international standard led by China stands as a milestone, witnessing China’s energy detection technology evolve from follower to leader, and from participant to rule-maker. To date, China has led the development of 14 international standards for natural gas, benefiting more than 20 countries across Europe, Asia and Africa.

Backed by self-developed core TDLAS laser technologies, Sinoke Ocean strictly complies with both international and national standards. With mature technical solutions and rich project experience, we provide one-stop, compliant, precise, stable and efficient safety monitoring services covering hydrogen sulfide detection scenarios including natural gas fields, long-distance transmission pipelines, petrochemical plants, waste incineration and industrial environmental protection.
