Hanhai Opto-electronic is a major scientific research achievement transformation institution of the Hefei Institute of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In October 2024, the refining areas of Sinopec Jinan Refining & Chemical Refinery are interconnected by several overhead pipelines that transport gases containing hydrogen sulfide and methane. The area between the refining plants is a public road with frequent vehicle and pedestrian traffic, posing safety risks in the event of gas leaks (hydrogen sulfide can irritate mucous membranes at low concentrations and be fatal at high concentrations, while methane can cause asphyxiation due to oxygen deficiency at high concentrations and is also flammable and explosive). To meet the safety requirements of the plant facilities, five fixed reflection-type laser gas remote detectors for hydrogen sulfide were installed on the second catalytic dry gas and liquefied petroleum gas desulfurization unit of the refinery. Additionally, four fixed reflection-type laser gas remote detectors for hydrogen sulfide and two for methane were installed on the flare gas transmission pipe gallery. These detectors continuously monitor areas prone to hydrogen sulfide and methane leaks within the units. When gas concentrations exceed safety thresholds, alarms are automatically triggered to ensure the safety of road traffic.
